Pretty Woman redefined feel-good romances when it premiered. Nearing its 30th Anniversary, here are ten things you likely didn’t know about the film.
It has been 30 years since Pretty Woman changed the feel-good movies forever. The movie, released in 1990, has unforgettable scenes such as the shopping in Rodeo Drive, which became mandatory in films of the genre. It also took Julia Roberts’ career to the next level, and she became one of the highest-paid female stars in Hollywood. Richard Gere will also be remembered forever as Edward.
Although it is one of the most famous movies ever released, there are still facts that most fans don’t know about Pretty Woman. Here are some of them.
10/10 The Film Had A Different Title

When the movie’s idea came up, the original title was “3.000”, a reference to the amount Edward would pay Vivian to stay with him for a week. However, after they added Roy Orbison on the track, producers decided that Pretty Woman would be more appealing. And they were right! It is almost impossible to imagine another name for this movie.
However, that was not the significant change they did since they started producing it.
9/10 Pretty Woman Was Supposed To Be A Darker Movie

Pretty Woman redefined the whole romantic movie genre when it came out. They made the love story light and perhaps that it is why it became timeless. What many people don’t know is that history could be completely different. The original idea was darker, and Vivan would be addicted to drugs
The original script has some remarkable scenes such as Vivian going shopping, the opera, and the restaurant. But it was not a feel-good movie, and the characters didn’t end up together. Disney’s executives demanded a different ending and also to change the tone of the movie.
8/10 Beverly Wilshire Hotel Had A Pretty Woman Experience

The Beverly Wilshire Hotel was an essential part of the movie since most of the scenes were shot there. Of course, they would not miss the chance to use it for marketing for many decades. On the 25th anniversary of the movie, the hotel release the Pretty Woman Experience.
For $100,000, guests could stay at the presidential suite, have a personal shopper to guide them on Rodeo Drive, couple’s massage, and $4,000 in clothes.
7/10 The Necklace Scene Was Improvised

Pretty Woman is full of memorable scenes, and the one Vivian received a necklace is one of them. When Vivan tries to reach the necklace, Edward closes the box, and she starts to laugh, and it was not in the script. The director thought the original scene was boring and asked Gere to surprise Julia Roberts doing that.
Another curious fact is that the necklace is valuable, and it is evaluated at $250,000.
6/10 Richard Gere Wrote A Song For The Movie

Richard Gere plays the piano in the movie, which might take some fans by surprise. The song he plays is also original, and he composed it, especially for Pretty Woman. The actor worked playing the piano in bars before his career took off, and that explains why he seems so comfortable in the scene. Sadly, the fans don’t see him using much of his musical talents in other movies.
5/10 Many Actors Wanted To Play Edward Lewis

Edward Lewis was a defining character in Richard Gere’s career and many actors trying to get that part. Julia Roberts shot tests with at least ten actors, including Tom Conti, Sam Neill, and Charles Grodin. Producers also wanted Denzel Washington to the role, but it didn’t work out.
Al Pacino almost played the role and even did the reading with the cast. However, he had to leave the project because they would start producing The Godfather III.
4/10 Diane Lane Almost Played Vivian

It is hard to imagine any other actress playing the leading role in Pretty Woman, but it almost happened. Diane Lane was invited for the movie, but she had to refuse because of conflicting schedules. Molly Ringwald, a teen-movie queen in the ’80s, also almost got the role.
3/10 The Pretty Woman’s Poster Was Photoshopped

Pretty Woman’s poster is also famous, but people missed many details about it. First of all, Richard Gere’s hair is much darker than it was in the movie. What we see in the poster is also not Julia Roberts’ body.
They used Shelley Michelle as a double and combined it with the actress’s face. Back then, Michelle was known as the most famous body double in Hollywood, and she is still proud of her work. And she does look flawless on that poster.
2/10 Richard Gere Is Not A Fan Of The Movie

Richard Gere will always be remembered as Edward, but it is not something he likes. “People ask me about that movie, but I’ve forgotten it. That was a silly romantic comedy,” he once said. The actor added that Edward “helped contribute to the global financial crisis, as he glorified greedy and selfish Wall Street types.”
Julia Roberts once said that she had to beg Richard Gere to accept the part in Pretty Woman.
1/10 The Crew Never Wanted A Sequel

While most fans would be thrilled to see Julia Roberts and Richard Gere playing Vivian and Edward again, it is unlikely that we will ever see a Pretty Woman 2 with them. The director Garry Marshall said that “We made a pact a long time [ago] — when we did it, we said, we’re not doing Pretty Woman 2 unless we all do it together.”
