What To Expect From The Upcoming Daisy Edgar-Jones Film: Where The Crawdads Sing

Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones is heading to the silver screen in the adaptation of Delia Owns best-selling book, Where The Crawdads Sing.

This summer’s blockbuster hit is already underway, the film Where The Crawdads Sing based on a book by Delia Owens of the same name has wrapped production and is set to hit theaters in June.

The book went viral around social media book clubs, such as Reece Witherspoon’s, and became notorious as a must-read. For Owen’s debut novel, it was a New York Times Bestseller in 2019 and 2020, making it an obvious choice for a film adaptation.

So far, there haven’t been too many spoilers about the film other than who is in it and the amazing production team. If you are a fan of Normal People, the good news is Daisy Edgar Jones starts in the film as the protagonist, Kya.

If you haven’t heard of the book, there is still time to read it before the movie release, but for now here is everything you need to know about the screen adaptation.

It Is Being Produced By Reece Witherspoon

Reece Witherspoon isn’t just one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, she is also a full-on entrepreneur and businesswoman. From a young age she began producing films, but really launched her own production company, Hello, Sunshine in 2016.

Her motives for starting the company, and the company’s current mission, is to support women in media to create content that is for women and made by women. This includes TV and movies, which the company has successfully produced including Big Little Lies and The Morning Show, but is branching out into diverse content such as NFTs and acquired The Home Edit which produces various types of media surrounding organization.

This company has a clear vision for what media will look like in the future, and that it will put women at the forefront. With this clear message, Where The Crawdads Sing is in good hands and backed by industry veterans.

It Is Starring Daisy Edgar Jones

The second reason this film is undoubtfully going to be a bit hit, is the star, Daisy Edgar Jones. Jones is most known for her work in the Irish mini-series, Normal People, based on a book by the same name by Sally Rooney. Rooney, similar to Owens, is known for having one of the world’s overnight best-sellers, making Jones a niche actress for representing incredible women in modern literature.

If you loved Normal People, you will love seeing Jones as Kya in Where The Crawdads Sings. Although the plots are very different. While Normal People follows a modern love story in Ireland over a few years, Where The Crawdads Sing is more centered around one character, Kya growing up in solitude in the Marsh in North Carolina.

Although Kya explores romantic relationships that also exist in time periods and are almost like different worlds, there is a lot more to unpack in Where The Crawdads Sing.

  The Plot

Kya grows up in solitude from a young age, as her family abandoned her after they are plagued with domestic violence. One by one, she is left alone as a small child to defend herself, in a place that is more or less wild.

She becomes the Marsh Girl, as the townspeople call her, and faces classism as a town legend for her life alone in the marsh. Speed up 15 years or so and Kya finds herself the suspect in a murder for the town’s prince charming, Chase.

The story goes back and forward between Kya’s experience growing up and the real-time of the murder trial. It touches on topics such as formative relationships, family trauma, and what it means to find love for yourself and others.

If the book was such a page-turner, surely the film will be a blockbuster success.

What Else You Can Expect From The Film

Aside from Witherspoon’s production team and Jone’s talent, there are a lot of industry veterans involved with making the film. Olivia Newman is the director, who has an impressive track record in the industry and Lucy Alibar wrote the script who is an oscar-nominated screenwriter for her work Beasts Of The Southern Wild, which is also about a kid growing up in solitude.

It isn’t just that this story is in the hands of experienced women, but women who seem to be tailored matches to produce this film with their previous storytelling abilities.

Delia Owens was also creatively involved, which always makes a difference for the screen translation of a novel. Fun fact Owens is a successful zoologist, which makes sense considering the story focus so much on the beauty of nature and animals.

The film will surely be a success, don’t miss it this June, and you still have time to read the book!
